What lessons should schools and universities learn?

Recommended Posts

The difference between the verbs learn and teach.

Damn - you got there before me!

I was about to post the same thing!

I think you all missed the point of the OP.

Doctrine wasn’t talking about which subject’s schools and universities should teach.

We rely on our schools, colleges and universities to give our children a good start in life through their education. BUT, there are now about a million unemployed youngsters who are 18-25. So why has our educational system failed them? Why does it keep churning out unemployable youth? Why don't the tories sort it out?

The economic system has failed them not education. If there were more jobs these unemployable types would be employable.

There are two reasons to go to University:

1/. You are interested in a subject, and want to learn all you can about it;

2/. You need to sell your services to earn enough to eat and put a roof over your head, and you expect your university course to make your services valuable enough for someone to buy them.

In the first case, YOU have made a choice, and decided to learn 10th century BCE Greek for your own pleasure (assuming you can find anyone to teach you.

In the second case, yes, the universities should think about the value for money of the courses they offer.

You have provided your line of thinking-there may be many other reasons outside the scope of both your experience and your imagination. In addition the Greeks were very wise even Hippocrates and can tell us many things which appertain to the contemporary.

Why is it a failure in the education system?

I left school at 15 without any qualifications at all and yet went straight into a job, like nearly all others at that time.

Once upon a time, universities were all about education, broadening ones horizons in life as well as education.

Now universities are a business with education being the product, and if the course does not get lots of buyers, then its closed. So sod off science, maths and such, as for most universities too boring for applicants.

When these mites/suckers sign up for the £50-100K debt for life, if one wants to be a vet or doctor, its economic suicide. So to get a PhD can cost well over 100K. So being thick is the sensible thing to be, and as we are all in it together who cares?

The way things are going, 3-5 hours of lectures per week for 12/13 weeks at (K might seem like people are being cheated, but if one does not have rich parents, then, know your place with the rest of the mob.

So at last those with money, can buy power, sod the idea of a meritocracy, it was a nice idea while it lasted, but its over, so get real.

The rich rule, and the rest with price rises can return to the filth their forefathers climbed out of 600 years ago, when they created the towns. With lack of work, wages going down, and in the not too distant future, the abolition of the minimum wage, then those with a few quid can at last afford to have servants, those that live below stairs of course.

This is the brave NEW WORLD, and its just starting, and do not forget its not till 2018 you have been promised this recession/depression/deflation will end. I do believe people actually believe this joke, just wait, it will never end, and why should it? Let poverty take over the UK, and the rest of Europe, welcome to third world values!

I wonder how many brilliant minds will be lost because of this?

Because of government imposed fees, universities will be recruiting from a much smaller cohort of possible students, (and many more will be from overseas.)

What inventions, cures, discoveries, will not be found because the right minds couldn't afford to go to university?

It's free to go to uni..you only pay when you are earning a reasonable wage...those from low paid families can get grants as well...

A great majority of past inventions and discoveries were done by people who never went to university and a lot were also serendipitous (lucky accidents).

You seem to forget that students also need to support themselves. In addition they sacrifice current earnings. Both are costs, making the free claim you assert ring rather hollow.

There are maintenance loans available...and you're assuming that they'd be out working if they weren't in uni..strange considering as how people keep asserting that there are no jobs..
