Road Bike Servicing in Sheffield

Recommended Posts

If you are confident that it will work again after Halfords have had hold of it...then go for it.

Local bike shop should be able to fix it afterwards if not

As for "rip off" - well, that depends if the bike shop does a full service. A quick clean and tweak is not a "full service" - stripping out all serviceable bearings is a "full service". And it takes time.

How much would it cost to rethread the frame for the rear derailleur?

The head of the allen bolt holding mine in place has snapped off leaving the shaft stuck in the frame, I drilled it and wedged in an allen bit but it only turned a tiny bit.

It's a total bodge job now and I would like to get it sorted so I can fit new gearing.

I had a old friend work for halfords.......

lets put it this way; if he was employable there then i wouldnt trust them with even opening a small tin of salmon leg.

but like said above if you want to trust either your road or woodlane bashing saftey to a part time bike mechanic / part time car wash shampoo specialist then feel free. . .

I wouldnt either.

Any biker - serious biker - should have his own tools and learn to fix his bike. Bikes today are actually much easier to work on as the higher quality of engineering has made it all so much easier. That really applies to the cassettes, gears and bearings. Also, with the internet you can find demo videos that show everything all done by several different people so you can pick and choose what you think is best.

I do all my own repairs [ road bike ] and then bought a few mtn bikes so as to learn the technology [ the hydraulics, dics brakes, suspension forks ] and took them apart and rebuilt them.

None of it was dificult.

As for shop prices ............... you ncan't be serious about Halfords. James take forever after a 15 minute sharp intake of breath, turning of calendar pages and a date somewhere in Autunm 2015. Butterworths only S6 - do not contemplate Abbeydale Road [ it's the same name and nothing else] are excellent. Wilson's are too. I say that of them both as they are traditional, been there for years and are old school.

Edinburgh whatever it is ............. in Sheffield are as bad as Halfords. Do not go there if you are a biker and not a yuppy, born again, green, etc etc. If someone else recomends a small local set up that does decent road bikes then chance that too. But do avoid the commercial, rip off, new to biking cobblers as they see it as a pur business and you the mug to be stripped.
