Penistone rd roundabout

Why bother banning the left turn from Herries Road into Penistone Road at the roundabout? Surely this is a manouevre that not many people will do anyway, but it might be useful to have the option of doing it in case the bottom of Herries Road opposite the football ground is blocked.

This worries me slightly, it's the map of the area involved in the consultation.

https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/152171/response/376052/attach/6/Extent%20of%20Consultation.pdf

Is there a reason why they specifically did not consult many residents in the area??

They appear to have only sent the consultation stuff to a few industrial units nearby (including those which will be demolished for the new Sainsburys???)

Of course there will be a reason - it's so they can be sure of getting the answer they want. :hihi:

They usually ban turn movements like that because they have to run the pedestrian crossing on the other road (Penistone Rd in this case) at the same time as that ahead movement in order to maintain capacity.

The simple solution there to keep traffic moving and not implementing yet more traffic restrictions and banned turns is to remove the pedestrian crossing or move the pedestrian crossing a couple of hundreds of yards further down the road towards Charlie Browns. Its hardly rocket science.

There already is one just down the road isn't there?

Pedestrians always want to cross right at busy junctions and roundabouts and the council facilitate this laziness buy giving them crossings there; Firth park and Brook Hill roundabouts are classic examples of this.

Drivers are not the only road users and hey don't always need the highest priority. Pedestrians should not need to walk another 2x200 yds to get across the road.

So presumably if you do want to do that turn, you'll have to go all the way round the roundabout and a bit more in order to get to where you want to go.

If you were wanting to make that turn from Herries Road, why would you not just go down the other part of Herries Rd and join Penistone Rd opposite the Wednesday Ground?

You would... unless that part of the road was blocked, or if you'd started off somewhere down that part of Herries Road that leads to the roundabout and you were going in that direction, or if you didn't fancy the right turn from the top of that road because it was heaving with football traffic, etc. etc.

That's why I said not very many people are likely to do it in the first place, so why not let those few carry on? People turn left on Brook Hill roundabout straight into a pedestrian crossing so why is it so terrible here when a lot fewer people are likely to try?

This strikes me as yet another 'the council want you to go that way and are determined to rule out all other options to make sure that you do' approach.

There can be many reasons for it, but as I've said it's sometimes necessary to not include a particular turn in order to maintain capacity. The ped crossing on Penistone Rd (into city) can't operate at the same time as an ahead/left/right movement from Herries Road, so it might mean an extra stage in the signal sequence, which means more lost time (because of the safety clearance times to and from that stage) and, at a busy junction, can be the difference between it working OK and there being lots of queues.

I'll ask the signal designers why it's being done.

Nor should drivers have to take massive ,un needed detours just to accommodate pedestrian crossings.
