Penistone rd roundabout

It's nothing to do with SCC being progressive or not. The Government advice to highway authorities is that traffic signals should be on 24/7.

Motorists are not the only road users. What about pedestrians who want to cross busy roads?

They go to one of the many crossings on Penistone road. No problem. Have the council even considered temporary traffic lights and consulted the higher authorities who have stated they can't do this? After all, it is complete common sense on this part of the road.

So basically we can expect to be held up by more traffic lights all day every day in an area which needs traffic lights for only 5-10% of the day? Great.

well as it currently is you been held up by some halfwit with a licence who believes they have a right of way no matter if it will cause further disruption for anyone else.

i think if you take away the "choice" from the inconsiderate then punish them if they still ignore it surely this will only go to make the roads move better when it is able to move.

this is though all reliant on the planners getting someone out there to do some looking at the flow and making the lights support the main flows at the busy times. ifthey fail this then nothing will get any better.

Currently, for the large majority of the day, I'm not held up at all

We are talking about signals controlling all vehicle and pedestrian movements at a significant crossroads which carries heavy traffic flows throughout the day. How do you think that is going to work safely without signals?

The peak traffic hours are a lot more than 5-10% of the day. Maybe 7.30 to 9.30 in the morning and 4.00 to 7.00 in the evening. That's 20% of the time and it's also pretty busy throughout the day.

I can't see any justification for having part time signals.

The nearest signalled crossings are a third of a mile away at Halifax Rd / Fox Hill Rd and a quarter of a mile away at Penistone Rd / Herries Rd South. Not exactly convenient for pedestrians and rather ridiculous to expect people to use these when they want to cross at the Leppngs Lane junction. There may be quite a few sets of signals and crossings on Penistone Rd, but it is a very long road.

Penistone Road has 32 sets of traffic lights in its 3 mile course, making it one of the most highly concentrated roads in the country.

It's also one of the only dual carriageways anywhere with a 30 limit.

This is pretty ridiculous for the main northern artery road into the country's 4th largest city - the main commuter and commerce route between Sheffield and Leeds and Manchester.

Is it any wonder business has given up on Sheffield when it hamstrings itself in such foolish ways.

The whole thing needs turning into a northern parkway - no lights, no roundabouts; but sliproads and a 50-70 limit (and dual carriagewayed all the way past Grenoside and High Green).

As the A61 is the big socio-economic dividing line through the city, perhaps pedestrian crossing of it shouldn't be encouraged.

Maybe the pubs in Hillsborough would become half decent if it was made harder for people from Parsons Cross and Southey to get there!

why? it barely takes 10 minutes to drive the length of it even in rush hour.

I think their was plans once to build a dual carriageway behind Penistone Road in the 1960's

As for the 30mph limit no one seems to do that until you hit the inbound speed camera just before Rutland Road

From 7:30 'till 8am there isn't really much of a problem on that road. Neither is there between 4 and 4:30. Also, a third of a mile is not far. Pedestrians cannot expect to be able to cross every road in the city exactly where they happen to be standing.

Anyway, let's imagine you're right and the roundabout is a nightmare for the 20% of the day you mentioned - why do we not have lights working for that 20%? Why do we have to inconvenience people who are now currently using the roundabout with no problems at all for 80% of the day?

Also answer me this - if the council have so much money to throw at measures which inconvenience motorists, why can they not spend some of this money on sorting out the traffic light timings on Penistone road and allow the traffic to move at a new limit of 40mph?
