Television Licence increase

Recommended Posts

You have to have a licence even if you will only watch Sky. You even have to have a licence if you only want to watch DVD's or videos.

I would quite happily opt out of the BBC and just watch Sky if it was possible, but it's not.

If you have a TV or video, you HAVE to pay the BBC even if you never, ever watch their programmes...:loopy:

Not strictly true, you only require the licence if you use a TV, Video recorder, set top box, DVD recorder or PC with tv card to receive or record TV broadcasts.

You can use without a licence a detuned tv to watch comercially available DVD's, videos, play games from games console etc.

Well...yes you can. You only need a TV licence if you have a device capable of receiving TV/Video broadcasts, correct?

You're correct. You may own a TV, DVD player etc and not have a license but they must be incapable of RECEIVING a broadcast, therefore it is permissible to watch a DVD that you have bought, if however you get your mate to record Coronation Street and you play that in your machine then you may be infringing copyright.

The carefully worded quote below is from the TV licensing website.

“If you use a TV or any other device to receive or record TV programmes (for example, a VCR, set-top box, DVD recorder or PC with a broadcast card) - you need a TV Licence. You are required by law to have one.”

Ok, so it's an old thread, but thought I would revive it instead of starting a new one! Just seen another trailer on the Beeb for another of those third rate so-called entertainment programmes full of over-egoed 'celebs' thinking they are being funny.

For heavens sake, we are paying a huge wadge for some dismal stuff! My brother-in-law in Wales is one of apparently thousands who have refused to pay their licence fees because of cuts to S4C, the Welsh chanel. They appear to be getting away with it! So, with cuts to the quality television we should expect, I am considering stopping paying for my licence! What do others think?
