Should margarine be banned?

Recommended Posts

You're unsure what point I was trying to make. Okay, let me try to make it more clear.

Most margarine in the UK does not contain trans fats. It is perfectly safe to eat, as far as we know and healthier than eating butter (although saturated fats have been unfairly maligned over the last few decades).

There is no "maybe" anywebsite, most margarine in the UK is already without trans fats.

So, in response to the OP, no, margarine should not be banned. Now stop spreading FUD about it.

Have you any evidence that it's perfectly safe to eat? I don't agree that it's safe to eat.

Given that you think saturated fats have been unfairly maligned, have you any actual evidence that margarine is healthier than butter?

Do you have evidence for that claim? What proportion of UK margarine doesn't contain trans fats?

I'm pretty sure that was meant to amusing. It made me smile anyway.

I was hoping for some interesting april fools style press release :-)

I gave my answer already- what kind of answer are you looking for?

If you're after the chemistry it's all on the wiki page I linked to earlier-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_fat#Chemistry

If that's not good enough then maybe you could simply tell us yourself? Or make whatever point you're building up towards?

I was interested in knowing if you understood the chemistry behind them. It's hard to debate the merits of various long chain fats when you dont understand the basic chemistry.

I'm really unclear on what point you're trying to make.

We'd noticed you are unclear on a lot of things.

tl;dr for people trying to read your stuff - OWD knows little chemistry, likes to use weasel words like "toxic" which are patently incorrect and spreads FUD in place of informed debate.

Just been speaking to this dieter I know who's making progress as she's now loosing weight, her nutrionists told her never to eat margarine because of the vegetable fats and other chemical nasties used to make it, margarine is only one molecule away from been plastic.

Googling has bought up many different results but then these things always do.....

Do you have any evidence it isn't?

Apart from an out of date fear about trans-fats?

The advice is still to limit the amount of saturated fat you eat.
