gnvqsos
Waterboarding although not a pleasant experience is a suitable form of extracting information from pussies. Leaves no residual physical damage and if it prevents another terrorist attack it serves it's purpose. China is not a target of terrorist activities but if China were and they captured suspected terrorists they'd do a number on them that would make waterboarding look like a Sunday dip in the pool You are assuming any information extracted is genuine-often it isnt. Can you explain the term pussy-It has a different meaning here in Blighty? SevenRivers
The Islamic supremacists active in Mali are brutal and heinous, much like Boko Haram in Nigeria and al-Shabab in Somalia, so good on the French for intervening and standing to fight for the innocent victims of the Islamists, we should give them any support they need. LeMaquis
And in the time its taken to have a brief chat on here about it France has basically surrended, what a surprise - http://www.expatica.com/fr/news/french-news/mali-islamists-much-stronger-than-expected-france_255317.html Surrendered? The link you provide says "The strength of the Islamists appears to have bolstered France's resolve to limit its intervention to pushing the Islamists back and softening them up for a West African force to re-establish government control over the north of Mali, which has been under the rule of Al-Qaeda-linked groups since April 2012. "The important word now is 'Africanisation', which means the rapid deployment of an African force. The situation calls for that and it is up to the Africans to restore Mali's integrity," the official said". In other words the French are sorting out the Islamists so the West Afican force can secure the area afterwards. That's hardly surrender. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jan/13/mali-crisis-militants-killed-french-jets says; ""Mali is now at the mercy of the French army," said a well-connected Malian official in Bamako. "They are bombing the north, they have killed many terrorists. The Islamists have been running into the desert – they have deserted Gao and Timbuktu."" And often it is. Good intelligence combined with obtaining information under duress has been proved to deter terrorist attacks. Pussy....... I bet, in as many words, every serving American president for the last 60 years. Torture isn't reliable or the west would do it openly. Cutting one mans hand off for guaranteed intelligence to save thousands is something I could live with but it isn't guaranteed.
woodmally
I'm no fan of islamist terrorist nutters and the sooner they are all dead the better but do we really need to get involved in every war against them going? Sub saharan Africa has the manpower to wipe them out and stands to loose the most if they win in this theater so why is it always Europeans or Americans that have to do the heavy lifting? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/raf-planes-head-for-mali-as-france-steps-up-assault-on-rebels-8449796.html I had to google where it was I've never even heard of the place till today. Why the devil are we fighting here?
andygardener
As we have found the war bit is the easy bit, the endless insurgency is the tricky bit. France seems to be making very heavy work of the war bit which does not bode well. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-21009368

Harleyman
They dont want a radical Islamic state in that part of Africa particulary when Algeria is just to the north. Mali was formerly a French possession. The Malian leader appealed to the French government for help and that's what the French military are now doing.
