chem1st
If HMV goes completely from the high st., do you think there would be room for some new independent record stores?
andygardener
Yes, they could sell 78's of George Formby records to nobody at all. As a sideline they could not sell whalebone corsets.
Happ Hazzard
No. No-one buys records anymore! Or CDs for that matter! If it was viable, HMV wouldn't be out of business!

HMV is a DVD store more than anything now and has been for a few years in that it has more floor space devoted to DVDs than CDs. The High Street branch has a few reissue vinyl LPs but the Meadowhall branch has none. Downloads and amazon have hit it hard. Physical shops would have to be specialist but whether they could survive is debatable. They'd be aimed at a niche market and have to pay rent and rates. I can't see specialist shops surviving in Meadowhall or city centres unless the council provided special cheap accomodation in a set area. ---------- Post added 15-01-2013 at 08:07 ---------- Cant see them making money to be honest ,as music is free to download on the internet ,so whats the point in paying for it when you dont have to. Yes but a lot of folk want a tangible item to show for their music collection. A lot of London's independent record stores such as Rough trade and Blackmarket Records are doing great and have recently taken on more staff.
