vicarry
As a kid, I lived on Priory Road, Ecclesfield and many of the locals referred to Priory Road as Buryem Lane and as a young boy, I really thought that it was the proper name for Priory Road. Anyone who knows the area will know why it was referred to as Buryem Lane. Mr. Phillips was the Verger at that time and he looked after the church property just up the road from our cottage. Does anyone remember Mr. Phillips.
Nigel Womersle
I remember Jack Phillips and I worked with his sister Ivy. Priory Road was called burying Lane because it led to the old churchyard and the cemetery.
vicarry
Thanks for the info Nigel. I think that I recall Jack Phillips' sister was for a long time, the post delivery person delivering mail from the Grimolby sisters post office which was situated opposite the bottom of Priory Road and Peter Bennetts butchers shop.
