sheffandy
Yes - it was built as a "soldiers' home"; the foundation stone was laid in 1907 according to the inscription on the stone beside the front door. Here is a photo dating from 1909. Fantastic photo, Hillsbro.
mediumfast
What a nice photo that is .my daughter does kickboxing there but to be fair it is somewhat run down but at least it is still mostly used for what it should be.I think my Grandad Harry Goddard and his brothers Ted and Ken had quite a lot do do with the place back in the 40s and 50s probably on the boxing side of things. hillsbro
I am somehow full of regret - almost guilt. Despite growing up a stone's throw from the building I've never been inside it! Here is a link to a 1980s photo in my "archives".
mediumfast
Oddly no BT cabinet in picture which I thought it would have been certainly in the 80s
stpetre
Did Hillsbro' boys club have a decent junior football team( late '50s early '60s) and perhaps Howard Wilkinson as a player ?
mediumfast
I have just had a look on Google images and my Uncle Ted is on a few of the football photographs I guess he was the coach or at least was when the photographs were taken I hope I can find some similar boxing ones with my Grandad on them. There was a guy called ted Goddard who trained the football teams for years. He was a Physio at Lodge moor hospital i believe working on the patients rehab in the spinal injuries unit. Ray Gillot (I think?) was his trainer back in the early 80s.
