Obelix
capping is singularly there to protect the cable during installation, nothing more. . you don`t earth capping, capping is not used to mechanically protect cable. Your two statements seem to be at odds with each other....
gym_rat
Your two statements seem to be at odds with each other.... not at all. capping is there to protect the cable during construction - mainly from the sharp edge of a plasters trowel and is made of thin plastic or galvanised tin strips, you can cut it with hand tools and offers no protection against penetration. For example - http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/SC3.html or plastic http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/MTCAP12.html neither of which would be earthed mechanical protection is something else entirely, for example http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Cable_Accessories_Index/Necessities~Cable_Protection/index.html and http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/CO20G.html the second item would be earthed, the one before wouldn`t. bet your glad you asked now, surely you wern`t trying to make me look silly? Obelix
I wasn't no - I was unsure what you meant by the two statements so asked. I had no intention of making you look silly at all - you do that all by yourself with comments like that...

Aleksandr
To be even more pedantic, if the cable is in a safe zone then there is no requirement for mechanical protection....IET reg 522.6.101 (v).....True, although can anywhere be safe when there's a 'man with a drill'? ---------- Post added 26-01-2013 at 15:47 ---------- cheaper? your not a sparks are you! capping is there to protect the cable from the plasterer and to hopefully allow future replacement, never going to stop a drill but I was forgetting about the cheap stuff. The conduit that I use would certainly stop a masonry bit, and most nails, although not sizeable masonry nails to be fair.
