Fallow
Surely you know that anybody can read threads/posts without joining ? ---------- Post added 21-01-2013 at 20:34 ---------- Why a second home ? Why not just a bedsit ? They are members of parliament. It would not do for our top people to have "bedsits". They need to entertain their families and friends. Bikertec
Should MPs claiming for 2nd homes also pay bedroom tax and do their bit to help? Its ok they would claim it back on there expenses.
Dromedary
So it's not a tax then it's a benefits thing. Fine, MP's get publicly funded benefits for second homes, their second homes should be subject to the same rules as benefit claimants. Edited to add - you joined a few days ago...how do you know about "all the threads in the past"? Er, when you start a thread it asks you to check on other similar threads before posting first. Perhaps in your naivety you didn't know that. Anything else to add?

sheff1johnny
If people on benefits, have to pay for an extra room, surely MPS who have a state funded house should have to pay for all the extra rooms they have. They should practice what they preach. Our MPS, have taken too much for themselves, and have taken it off the poor to pay them. There expenses should be limited to the bedrooms they need. ---------- Post added 08-02-2013 at 18:50 ---------- They are members of parliament. It would not do for our top people to have "bedsits". Rupert_Baehr
What's bedroom tax? A "tax" you pay on spare bedrooms, don't know the figures though. Sorry I wrongly assumed that with all the threads in the past on the introduction of a bedroom tax for housing benefit claimants that people would know. Its being introduced in April and penalises anyone who is classed as under occupying a property. They will lose a percentage of benefit dependant on how many bedrooms they are not using. Hope that's clearer. Perhaps they could rent out the unused bedrooms? By the hour? If MPS get a second home and it's paid for from the public purse, then they too are on 'Housing Benefits' and the same rules should apply to them as to others. BoroB
The MP's need a second home. No they don't need a second home - they need somewhere to stop when attending parliament but this does not have to be a taxpayer funded residence. Thousands of ordinary people work away form home and manage without the need for a second home.
iansheff
I don't know the ins and outs Andy, but i think it only applies to those on housing benefits. Isn't a free second home a sort of benefit? Couldn't Lizzie and Phil do bed and breakfast at Balmoral and Sandringham to get some money in, Cameron could do the same at Chequers? They all have plenty of bedrooms and not in use all the time.
