British citizen faces death penalty in Indonesia.

And if someone planted those drug on you, or you only did it because some rather nasty looking types from the local state sponsored tolerated drugs cartel threatened they'd kill your children/family... you'd happily accept the punishment?

The elephant in the room that most seem to be avoiding.

I have been reading a couple of reports this week about how USA troops turned a blind eye to opium production in Afghanistan so they could keep the warlords on their side.

I think I would go with a morphine overdose.

Sounds like a blast, but I don't think it's a recognised means of delivering the death penalty is it?

Malaysia is one of seven countries that has the death penalty for not believing in Allah.

of all the garbage I've ever read on this forum that has to take the biscuit. Ever been there? Do you even know that only just over half of Malaysia's 30 million citizens are even Muslims at all?

Malaysia does still have the death penalty, but in common with most other south east countries there has been a moratorium on it in recent years and hardly anybody has been executed for any reason in recent years. Of the 10 ASEAN countries, only two - Singapore and Vietnam - currently conduct, as in actually carry out, executions regularly. All the others, including Indonesia, have basically stopped executions compared to before. Only the Philippines though, out of all the 10 ASEAN countries (totalling over half a billion people), have actually abolished the death penalty for all offences.

They should have the death sentence here for druggies, and chop the hands of thieves, shop lifters ect, there would be less crime, this country is far too soft, there is no deterrent.

Why don't you clear off and live with the Taliban or something if you want that degree of vengeful barbarity?

This is Britain.

The woman in question hasn't been sentenced in Britain, she's been sentenced in Indonesia.

I'm well aware of that thankyou Fred. I was responding to the post I quoted - in which Eastwood suggests barbaric and medieval punishments in Britain.

If this was the case they wouldnt have found overwhelming evidence that she was simply smuggling to line her own pockets.

Lets face it, you could always try the 'someone made me do it' argument for any charge...smuggling, murder, rape, theft.... its potentially a great argument but a little delving into a persons past and their personal life could soon cast serious doubt on it.

They might have, if they'd looked. I'm not sure I'm as confident as you appear to be about the Indonesian justice system.

Besides, she shouldn't be facing death anyway. It's just plain wrong to kill people anyway (that's why murder is a crime) especially just for smuggling drugs.

Or maybe people stop trying to smuggle drugs into their country, then this issue wouldnt arise.

If you visit another country ,you must respect that country`s laws, and be aware of the punishments for breaking their laws. It is for the Government of any country to decide what laws they put in place ,and what punishment to impose for anyone breaking those laws. I had to laugh when i saw a Government minister speaking in Parliament yesterday about this matter. Its got nothing to do with the British Government what punishment another country`s courts pass . This woman knew the punishment for drug smuggling, yet still tried to enter the country with a massive amount of Drugs and got caught. No sympathy what so ever.

Equally, if you don't respect another countries laws, like another poster suggested, you have the option of boycotting that country and taking your holiday money elsewhere.

This incident is just another example of the idiotic consequences of the (apparently) world-wide 'war on drugs'- so I'd suggest anyone who opposes that war would do well to boycott any countries who execute drug users or drug smugglers.

Especially corrupt ones like this, where planting drugs on innocent tourists is known to happen.

I look forward to your reply to the following post-

You'd be okay with agnostic holiday makers being killed on arrival at the airport there I suppose, laws are laws after all.
