Expat owl
A story to put a smile on the face of Chem1st perhaps ??? Tens of thousands of desperately needed new homes will be created in London under plans to let developers turn office blocks into flats. Government officials believe that up to 40,000 flats could be created in London and the South-East in a rush to put under-used commercial space to better use. In total, England could get more than 100,000 homes. http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/100000-new-homes-will-be-built-in-disused-offices-8461605.html
quisquose
A story to put a smile on the face of Chem1st perhaps ??? Surely not. Chem1st thinks we're not breeding enough and the population is falling. We'll all fit into Doncaster in a few generations.
Dromedary
Yes but will those homes have affordable rents especially as is down south. What's needed is affordable rents and social housing instead of paying for private landlords to get rich from the taxpayer.
Plain Talker
They've done this on Archer Road, here in Sheffield, the old Centenary works. They've been turned into "apartments", as have the office suites, above Atkinsons, on the Moor, which have been turned into student "pods". Minimo
If the office blocks are standing empty, sometimes for years, then they are not generating income for the owners/developers. It must cost a fair bit to have them standing empty while interest has to be paid on the loans needed to build them. So they should be grateful to have some return on their investment, and should be 'persuaded' to make the flats available to those on lower incomes. Plain Talker
Student Pods?...............well lets hope they are contributing to the running of the city!!....ie paying council tax!!!! *glum* I doubt it, as they are student pods, not general housing. (well, that's the case with the ones above Atkinsons, anyway)
