Mecky
Why do people think there is an housing shortage when there are 700k vacant properties in the UK? If the plans are to convert offices into living accommodation, what does that say about the state of the economy?

andyofborg
You'd think so, but they still want top dollar for them. Also you'd have to stick a floor right accross the middle of them or you'll end up with lots of 2000sq ft units with stupidly high 10m eves height. Once you faff around doing all that it's probably as cheap not to bother. Big w is a case in point, sat there for years waiting for one big tennant. rather than partitioning and such like why not just run the warehouse as a service you either collect or the customer delivers the stuff, your people stack it in the warehouse and then either deliver it or put it on the customers lorry when it goes. charge a fixed fee per pallet per week and maybe a delivery/collect charge and your rolling in it. probably safer and more secure than having individual units with loads of people from different companies running each other over with forklifts

Jeffrey Shaw
The councils grant building consent because the new blocks produce an easy income stream for the council even if they are unoccupied. OR The councils grant building consent because there are no statutory grounds to refuse.
