Scabbydog
I'm glad to see we are happy that an inch of rain - or a foot of snow, won't be flooding Meadowhall then. But combined with the predicted heavy rain and melting snow that is forecast for the weekend it might. The 2 aren't mutually exclusive.
Isabelle
The River Don doesn't seem very high at the moment, I had a look when I was on the bus today and it looks lower than normal.

It will do. The ground is frozen and water isn't getting into the rivers and out to sea. It is trapped on the land as ice and snow. I think the met office is worried that the coming warm weather along with heavy rain will melt the snow and that along with the new rain will all enter the system at the same time. I'm pretty sure the snowman idea was a spoof to gain publicity and make folk aware of the possibility of flooding.
