Is The Miners Strike Still Vivid In Your Mind?

Recommended Posts

just cos YOU find something offensive doesnt mean its against forum rules, just means youre a lightweight

have a good day ;)

Thank you Mel. My opinion of Thatcher is widely held among the people who lived through those times and knew people who lost their businesses because they had them in mining communities and the country as a whole is still reaping the whirlwind of what her government did.

She won in 79,83 and 87 but never gained a large share of the vote.If you read the post I said your comment was pompous not you. Please stick to the facts!:hihi:

Thatcher won 43.9% of the vote in '79, 42.4% in '83 and 42.2% of the vote in '87. Her popular vote increased after the miners strikes in '87 going from 13,697,923 votes in '79 to 13,012,316 in '83 and finally jumped by 3/4 of a million votes to 13,760,935 in '87.

Compare that to Blairs highest percentage of 43.2% back in 1997.

Saying she never gained a large share of the vote is well totally wrong and her support in terms of popular vote, rose after she dealt with the miners strikes.

Don't try and change history as it will degrade your argument.

It only varied by just over 1% and in percentage terms she actually had less of a mandate in 1987 and the comparison to Blair is nonsense because he was a wishy washy leader who had no idea of socialism. The labour ceased to have any credibility after the sad demise of John Smith. She dealt with the miners alright and the result has turned this country into a third rate nation from which there seems to be no sign of recovery.

There are winners and losers and the losers will always be unhappy when they are bested. One thing is for certain, that some of those who were on the losing side are that childish they still cling onto feelings and emotions that are now confined to history. In most cases they are not people who where directly effected, they are not the ex-miners, but rather people on the periphery who shout the loudest.

There are soldiers from WWII who have shaken hands with their old adversaries who tried to kill then years before that have more maturity than some parts of the ex-mining community.

Its in the past, its over, arguing about it doesn't change what happened. Holding onto hate, for the right or wrong reasons only damages the holder. Best to let it go, get on with your life and become a better person.

I'm sorry but you cant have less of a mandate in a democracy. Thatcher won, that is how it works. She had the ruling majority in the house of commons and she had the will of the people behind her. You cant try to side step the counter argument because Blair was wishy washy. We are talking about the election statistics, whether or not one candidate is X or Y makes no difference to the figures we can all see.

You have a point in some of what you say but it is the future generations who have no hope and this is caused by what she started and all subsequent governments have failed to address. We weren't at war under Thatcher except from the enemy within so that is a pointless comparison. In war both sides try to kill each other.

Why do future generations have no hope?

It's utter madness to suggest that the mines would still be open today, and still employing the same numbers of people that they did in the 60s and 70s. The days of whole communities relying on one employer and generations of people working in the same industry are long gone, mining is hardly unique in that.
