Strix
We've just booked a break in Chester Does anybody have any recommendations for days out and things to do? Anywhere that allows dogs is of particular interest (though not totally essential)

mikeG
Boat trip on the river. Possibly April to October only. Have a look round the cathedral. Dogs may be a problem. Grosvenor museum - not far from Bridge St. - ask for directions. There's a big new hotel/pub overlooking the racecourse which I believe do excellent, reasonably priced lunches. alchresearch
Ewloe Castle just over the border. Totally free and unsupervised (there's a great stairway up to the top of it). And just outside Mold is a hill called Bryn Alyn with some spectacular views and a rare limestone pavement. And loads to see and do on Wirral: http://www.visitwirral.com/ Caldy is my local beach and its probably the best. Try and time it right to visit Hilbre Island. Ellesmere Port has a boat museum and a good place to see some massive ships entering the Manchester Ship Canal. Just south of Chester on the Dee is the village of Farndon. The florist is owned and run by Paul Burrell, Princess Di's former butler! On the M53 before you get to Chester is the lovely market town of Frodsham (if you like real ale visit the Helter Skelter pub). Just up the road from that is Lady Hayes craft centre - a great place of bric a brac shops, micro brewery, Bob Carolgees candle shop and a fantastic second hand book shop. http://www.ladyheyes.co.uk/
kaleidoscope
Also worth a visit is Port Sunlight Village: http://www.portsunlightvillage.com/ There's also the Blue Planet Aquarium and the nearby Cheshire Oaks Shopping Village for a bit of retail therapy. cressida
Visit Nantwich where there are some fine Tudor buildings, only half an hour from Chester https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=10&hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1093&bih=494&q=Nantwich&oq=Nantwich&gs_l=img.12..0l10.1668.4040.0.7665.8.5.0.3.3.0.118.412.4j1.5.0...0.0...1ac.1.8nAfo1J4SJo
alchresearch
Nantwich is one of the few places with an open air, heated brine pool. Doesn't open until Easter though.
