Duck survives after crossbow attack

Recommended Posts

Sorry, I'm sure you had a point there somewhere but if disappeared amonst the abuse.....

You are making a strawman. I've never said I would "wander about" with a crossbow that is cocked (you don't "load" a crossbow, you draw and **** it). That's something you've made up to argue a point that never existed. I have said that there is no law that says I cannot have a bow in public. That doesnt mean it's tensioned an ready to go as you well know.

Tell me what law says I cannot practice archery - with either a longbow, recurve, crossbow or whatever on access or common land.

Well?

Thought you wouldnt be able to.

I have not said there is any law that's says you can't practice archery on common land. I've said there is no law that says you can practice archery on common land.

Thus you are subject to statute law and there is a list as long as your arm that relate to discharging lethal weapons in public.

You can have your crossbow cased and uncocked just as I can have my .22 cased and unloaded in public, provided we have a reasonable explanation as to why we have it with us at the time.

My advice to anyone wishing to fire a weapon in public is first consult the local police and get their permission to do so, what is your advice?

You're discharging a lethal ranged weapon. In public. There are numerous laws against that.

Which laws?

Lets make this simple, would you be happy to meet up on common or access land and you start "practicing" archery with your crossbow and I'll call the police and complain and then see what happens? If not, stop giving people advice that's going to get them nicked.

What would they get nicked for?

I believe the first relevant one is around 1953, and many follow on from that, but actually I can't be bothered to dig them all out. If you, or any reader, thinks discharging a lethal weapon in public is just fine then go ahead and field test the theory.

Bored of this thread now and hope the duck is OK and the scumbag who shot it gets caught.

Which ones relate to loosing a bow? You are attempting to transpose your firearms knowledge to archery and they are very different things.

Under English law there is no requirement for a law to tell you you can do something. You just do it. It's only if there is a law forbidding it that you have to worry. What law forbids archery...? Oh that's right. There isn't one.

I've already detailed for you however the law that lets you practice archery as a recreation - the Countryside and rights of Way act 2000 Ch 1, Section subsection 1. I commend it to you as something worth studying.

I'm glad to see you agree finally however that it is perfectly permissible to have a bow in public. I'm just sorry it took you so long to realise it.

My advice to you is to realise that you don't "fire" a bow, you don't "load" one, and you don't treat them as a firearm, otherwise you look foolish.

Do you mean the Prevention of Crime Act 1953 ?

I can't see anything in that which practicing archery in public would conflict with

I have, many a time. So has Obelix.

So do the Aardman Archers club, on the playing fields near me, without any backstops or cordons or police escorts and without anybody fearing for their lives or calling the police. They don't even prevent members of the public from going about their business.

Well there we go then, anyone can fire crossbows on playing fields, RootsBoster guarantees it is legal, and will do the jail time for you if it turns out to be rubbish.

I haven't guaranteed anything, I've asked you which law(s) you think forbids it, to which you seem to have taken offence.
