Father(army),Mother( Sammy Fox Steelworks) so my sister and I were placed with an Irish Catholic Grandmother on a farm up in the Pennines.Granny was full of piety so we had to be too. From the age of 6 we had to travel unaccompanied to Hillsboro(Sacred heart),this meant an hours walk to catch the first bus 10.30 for the 11 o clock sevice, home by 1.30.But when we were Confirmed that meant we had to take communion every Sunday,1.30 was late for breakfast so we found an alternative(providing it wasn't knee deep in snow). An 8 mile hike to the Carmalite Covent in the hills above Outibridge, there we could get communion at the 9.0.clock service (the nuns were in darkness behing a steel grille, very Sound of Music),then breakfast by12.0.clock.The hike took us overland through fields, over stiles through farmyards and along bridle paths. We were 7 years old and had to go by ourselves, warding of farmyard dogs, geese etc and praying that the cows were just that- with no bull in the field.Grandmother was later diagnosed with religious Mania.
