cutie23
Does any one know if you wish to use a private room but remain as an NHS patient can you request a private room for a fee? I have friend who will be having a haemorroid surgery next week and would like some privacy after his surgery at Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Many Thanks

cutie23
I think that the majority of the the time that patients are allocated their bed space based upon clinical need rather than financial inducement, how long are they going to be in hospital? 3 Days! However I think it may be due to religious reasons why he would prefer not to share and he is from Syria where he was telling me he is used to having his own room. I get the feeling it may be more snobby attitude, fair enough he has the money but I don't fully understand his logic!

Many Thanks I think with the current cuts this will harder to achieve, and he may have to sit it out at home until a bed becomes available. If you want a private room you need to give plenty of notice-if he has piles of money he could consider the Claremont in Sandygate
medusa
I've never heard of anybody getting a private room for a fee at the RHH. I got one on my last stay because I'm allergic to latex so they decided that it was safer to put me in a private room where I could be apart from all the latex stuff and have my own supply of latex-free gloves and giving sets etc. but on previous stays it was people who needed barrier nursing or who were at risk of infection from other patients/visitors. Nagel
The NHS are sending a lot of patients to private hospitals to provide some extra capacity and so reduce waiting lists. I don't know how these are allocated or if the patient has any choice, but in private hospitals there are no shared wards and everyone gets their own room. It would be worth looking into. francypants
I would hope not, why should money talk in a NHS hospital ? If he wants preferential care, he should pay to go private with everything else that would entail. If he doesn't want to do that, he should take pot luck like everyone else has to. francypants
If he tells them hes got a bit of diarrhoea and sickness, he will get his own room... just a tip I would think they would postpone his operation, baring in mind the nature of the operation.
