Census returns from 1851 to 1901 indicate that there was a "lodging house" at 35 Water Lane. The 1905 directory shows "Mrs Emma Reins, lodging house keeper" at 33 & 35 Water Lane, with "Henry Carr, lodging house keeper" at No 37. The 1925 directory shows "The Hostel, exors. of A. Truelove, proprietors" next to Gilmour's brewery in Water Lane. It had evidently closed by 1941, when the 1942 directory was compiled.

This web page states that "Arthur Truelove was a Councillor and later Alderman of Sheffield who built two hostels which gave clean and cheap accommodation for men working in the town". The other hostel was the one on West Bar.

Is this the same as West Bar hostel...
No, but the Water Lane and West Bar hostels were both run by the same trust, using money left by the Sheffield businessman and publlic figure Arthur Truelove (see Hillsbro's post #2).

A lot of people seem to think that this is a photograph of Water Lane and it is suggested that it used to run down towards Snigg Hill Police Station and that the top part where the Ladies are standing is directly under the current Steel workers Mural that now dominates in the City Centre?
