aelfheah
Jeremy Vine hosted this topic, which was prompted by a couple of recent surveys which appeared to connect working class people ('the poor') and fatness (fast food and lazy cooking?) With opposing guests Edwina Currie and (?) a Socialist writer, he asked if we could tell the 'class' of a person from walking behind them, the argument being that lower class folk eat rubbish and fizzy drinks, whereas posher/richer people don't? This invited interesting stereotypes from callers, ie the 'chavs' and 'lazy' and the portly 19thC Lord of the Manor and thin underslass of paupers! Is fatness a class issue, with the 'middle classes' being more enlightened about dietary needs? Or is it down to cost- cheap, fatty ready meals and pop? geared
and you don't get plenty of fat businessmen, politicians, judges, lawyers, public figures and stuff?
andygardener
Obesity is down to all sorts of factors. Exercise and diet being the main ones. Class would come so far down the list it's not worth mentioning.

John Prescott, & Cyril Smith blow that argument straight out of the water, utter cobblers. Plus the list following is of people who are either fat or been fat, and they weren't skint or working class. Okay some are no longer with us, but they were fat. These people either are fat or have been fat in the past: Kirstie Alley Marlon Brando Rosie O'Donnell Oprah Elvis Janet Jackson Michael Moore Peter Jackson (film director) Al Roker John Candy Artie Lange Fat Joe Queen Latifah John Goodman Jack Black Roseanne Ruben Studdard Courtney Love Jack Osbourne Kelly Osbourne Britney Spears (kinda) James Gandolfini Brian Baumgartner (from "The Office") Carnie Wilson Star Jones Kevin Federline Aretha Franklin Oprah Winfrey

Please amend your list to include people from the uk. You also included Oprah twice, is that because she "yo-yos" or was it a mistake on the page you used copy and paste on? Sid Umpley
of course you can tell the class of someone when walking behind. uggs, baggy leggings, greasy hair etc. all noticable from the rear.
gnvqsos
I think there are similar numbers of fat people in poor areas, but they do not disguise their weight. They wear shell suits and garish colours which catch the eye, whereas fat people like Nigel Lawson and David Cameron disguise their weight with dark colours and loose garments.Do successful dieters become middle class when losing weight? geared
Elton John is kinda portly, Jools Holland, Andrew Lloyd Webber also. Kerry Katona isn't short of a few quid either, and she's packed on plenty of beef since getting famous

That's probably a mistake, but I mention Prescott & Smith at the beginning, they're British, or were. As for the others it said working class fatties, I was pointing out these people are fat, not working class, it did not specify which country. Fatties in UK John Barnes, Razor Ruddock, Gazza (was a right lard arse), Jimmy 5 bellies, that fat youth on that singing programme, Dawn French, Lenny Henry, Adele, that's just off top of my head.
