Milliband announces his budget

Recommended Posts

He's finally said something about his ideas for a budget.

Introduce mansion tax on houses over 2 million quid.

With the money made from this, reintroduce the 10p in the pound tax, which he said will help 25 million working people.

He reckons it will make 2billion. Seems optimistic to make that much. It would mean 80 in peoples pockets if it works. Minus of course the amount to introduce 2 taxes.

Also bringing back 50p top band

The 50p tax rate is a purely political move..when it was in use before this happened..

"The HMRC thinks that the total declared taxable income of those earning more than £150,000 a year slumped from £116bn in 2009-10, to £87bn in 2010-11."

from the beeb

People just re-arranged their finances to avoid paying it..what Makes Ed think this won't happen again?

He wants to reintroduce the 10p starting tax rate but says he doesn't know what the tax band will be because that depends upon how much the mansion tax will raise.

So not really carefully and fully costed then.

He's not really talking about anything new either..the 10p rate used to exist before Brown got rid of it and the "mansion tax" is Vince Cable's idea..

A far simpler plan would be to make the low tax band 10k, which it is getting close to.

We can already observe what happens to housing markets when you start taxing high value property.

it's a statement of intent rather than a full blown policy

He said in his speech that Brown made a mistake removing it.

How did Ed vote in 2007 when it was removed?

It's a sound bite..it's what he thinks people want to hear..it's playing politics..like they all do..

Sounds like he's planning to reduce the tax free amount to make up any difference.
