10.02.13 - Wincobank Forum 2-1 Sheffield Forum

Recommended Posts

Sheffield Forum failed to make the League Cup Quarter Finals as they were narrowly beaten by cup favourites, Wincobank Forum. One forced change to the starting line up was Jordan Gladwin in for Liam Wales.

It was a wet morning following a slight snow fall leaving Steel City partially covered as the teams arrived for what was to be an excellent cup tie. Sheffield Forum by far the underdogs but high on confidence against a team in the First Division pushing for top spot there and also in the semi finals of the Junior Challenge Cup.

It was open at the very start of the game with both sides having shots stray off target but Wincobank soon took control. Despite the attacking possession, they failed to trouble Forum keeper Adam Smith and Forum played well on the break, passing well at times and getting forward.

Wincobank missed a couple of half chances whilst Forum had another shot blocked and one near enough came to a stop in the boggy goal mouth. But it was Sheffield Forum that took the lead after 20 minutes. Daniel Sheedy was played through on goal but the keeper got to the ball first, clearing it out of the area but it only went as far as Joe Neate who very calmly netted his first goal of the season from 25 yards out.

Forums spirit kept them in the game but failed to double the lead as Sheedy and Shane Middlebrook both failed to reach through balls as they slid off the surface. Wincobank still had more of the play but were drowned out by Forums defending through to half time.

The second half continued in very much the same way. Wincobank hit a couple shots wide from range whilst Jordan Gladwin very nearly scored Forums second had the keeper not snatched it from the top corner.

Wincobanks pressure then paid off on 65 minutes as they claimed a free header from a corner to bring the scores level.

Sheffield Forum reacted and pushed forward a little more and 5 minutes later had the ball in the back of the net. Wincobank keeper dropped the ball causing a goalmouth scramble where their own defender fell into the keeper whilst Gladwin muscled off a challenge to smash the ball in from 2 yards only for the referee to disallow the goal 5 seconds later. The decision left Forum fuming as it was a perfectly good goal and would have given them the advantage again.

Instead, they were left to rue the chalked off goal as Wincobank scored an impressive second goal. The right winger took on his man as they hit Forum on the break this time, then went past another eventually coming in from the left and hitting a perfect strike into the top right corner of the net.

The rest of the game was end to end and Forum opened up a little as they moved to 3 up front but couldnt convert their chances.

In the end, a very disappointing result due to the disallowed goal but an impressive performance from the whole side as Wincobank were made to sweat and really work for the win.

Onwards and upwards as we face Holly Bush next week in a return to league action.

Team: Smith, Z Crownshaw, Griffiths, Baugh (Appleby), Bowden, Proctor (Jenkins), Neate, Gladwin, Gray (C Crownshaw), Sheedy, Middlebrook. Unused sub: Coates
