Crisis loans and community care grants to be phased out

Recommended Posts

So after April this year they are being phased out,so those who use the job centres to get emergency loans are going to be in for a shock when they are told the money is not available and the local council and charities are going to be responsible for helping people to get food on the table.

I expect the staff at the job centers are going to get some serious grief from the benefits claimants.

While we are in this crisis situation we certainly shouldn't be contemplating adding even more people to the numbers.

Can I ask a serious question without getting the usual smart alec replies;

If they stop crisis loans (and they are loans, not handouts,) what are desperate people supposed to do? Where can they go?

They shouldn't stop crisis loans, they just need to tighten up the criteria. I've known people take them out for a night out or child's birthday party.

My fear is that they will fall into the hands of loan sharks or Payday Loan Companies (Loan Sharks with the blessing of the government,) and that way lies disaster.

That's who people in low paid jobs have to apply to in times of desperation.

Pay day loan companies, money shops, log book loan outfits, these are increasing their presence on our high street as more and more people are forced into impossible circumstances by unemployment, low wage work, 'as required' and part time contracts.

Poverty is big business!

Being unable to fulfill mainstream lending criteria doesn't denote poverty,neither does desperation.

They are not being phased out I'm sorry to say, they are STOPPING as of 31st March. Any claims before that date will be considered but as from 1st April they are obsolete., no more will be considered in any way shape or form after 31st March.

There will still be payments that new claimants can apply for until their benefits are sorted, short term advances. Oh and yes the brown stuff will certainly hit the fans, trust me.

I cant see Wonga complaining . :hihi::hihi:

Hey up Penistone I know what you mean fella, local authorities are supposed to be taking up something to help people, but all they will say is we're cutting services and cannot afford it.

I know for a fact that lots who claim Crisis Loans are trying it on but, lots are in actual dire straights and I do genuinely feel for these people and what they will do.

It was on the news yesterday that people who took out PD loans and struggled to pay back, has risen 4,000%, yet the criminals that run them are government backed.:loopy:

I'm generally right-of-thinking and pro-free market economy, it's no secret on here.

But PD-type loan companies represent the one sector (if there was to be only one - energy and insurance are the 2 others AFAIconcerned), which I actually want the Gvt to strong arm, particularly as regards the APRs they practice. Usury rates should be capped by law, no ifs or buts.

That they advertise on TV and portray themselves as 'nicey-nicey', 'responsible' lenders who (allegedly) don't send the muscly types through the debtors' doors is neither here nor there: it is a 'business' which is intrisically unethical, any which way you look at it.
