frank ryan
cardinal keith o brien, top catholic in the UK, stonewall's 'bigot of the year', the man who has been outspoken about the risk of gay rights to the fabric of society is gay (which is fine) and has a record of abusing young men in his employment (which isn't). last week he wasn't gay or predatory and was going to sue - this week he is gay and predatory and very sorry. as an atheist brought up catholic this is no surprise to me - are there any practising left footers out there who can comment on how this plays in the local churches? should o brien be in the dock for sex offences? excommunicated? it'll take more than 3 hail mary's and a glory be to get out of this one. frank ryan
the victims haven't complained to the rozzers so far as is reported - just to the vatican, which doesn't have a good record on dealing with perv priests, especially those who viciously promote the vile homophobia whilst getting it on with unwilling young men behind the vestry. it's great to watch though isn't it!! Not saying he isn't a bigot but hypocrite of the year would be more appropriate.
taxman
Here is the report on the BBC. "Cardinal Keith O'Brien has admitted that his sexual conduct has at times "fallen beneath the standards expected of me"." On the contrary I thought we expected this sort of stuff from all of them nowadays.
Riche
He was the top Catholic in the UK. He was gay. He was a sex pest. He was in a position of trust and power. The pope new about this and others and didn't want to be part of the backlash, one wonders?
scousemouse
I watched Steven Fry at some Catholic debate along with Anne Widdicombe, what a speaker! He tore into the Catholics and what they stand for. Not only are the Brothers, Fathers vile, some of the nuns were just as bad in a different cruel way. ronthenekred
Couldn't you just at the attempt to sanitise abuse/hypocrisy with "improper". This will most likely be dealt with by the church..now that he's declared retirement he'll likely while out his days in Brighton.
