TJC1
We should aim for the top of the table. Man Utd wouldn't settle for 12th, neither should the UK as a country. Out of 200 countries we are around 20th. That's not too shabby. This study covers 19 countries.
Mister M
It has been posited that a contributory factor in UKs relatively poor health is the large gap between rich and poor. I think UK is lagging in the income / wealth equality league as well.

Yes but Alex has a elite squad not a load of couch potatoes riddled with diabetes.
ricgem2002
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-21654536 How can we improve our performance? Why won't people stop drinking, smoking and eating unhealthy foods? Not to mention driving everywhere instead of walking, running or cycling. are you prepared to pay the extra tax when people stop all these things. Vague_Boy
we slipped down the table but life expectancy increased by 4 years. Britons have 68.6 years of healthy life, whereas people in top-ranked country, Spain, have 70.9 years of healthy life on average. It's all relative. ---------- Post added 05-03-2013 at 20:28 ---------- Well, 12th isnt that bad. We beat Denmark, Finland and a few other countries. You're clearly willing to settle for second best then?

I1L2T3
It's all relative. Sure but as far as I can see rather than just moving the goalposts they've introduced a whole new set of goalposts, making a new health measure the focus. Years of healthy life? 68.6 years? When the retirement age increases to 67, 68, 69 does that mean that on average people will spend their entire retirement in poor health. It's clearly nonsense. I call bull-poo. erebus
What a surprise, as if one cannot work out what and why its happening. Maybe its time to celebrate the majority helplessly caught in the headlights, wondering what is going on. Everyone continues to discuss the merits or not of the Kings new clothes, like its actually important. But I suppose if all you want to do is make friends on a site like this, then desperation creates a narrow vision, when one is concerned with popularity. Forget the bigger picture, don’t join up the dots, get lost in bits of detail, and pretend one is enlightened??????
jfish1936
Don't forget that if people live longer, they'll either need more money for pensions, or retirement age will need to go up, meaning less job vacancies! At present, we each have an individual choice: 1/. Live healthy; 2/. Live unhealthy. The rules for healthy life have been available in writing at least from the 13th century (Rule of Salerno). Do not blame the community for what its less well-advised members do. If they choose extreme sports, they'll suffer injuries; if they choose obesity, smoking and drugs, they'll pay the penalty. Live your own life clean and show the "lesser breeds" the way
