What is a"smithy house"?

Recommended Posts

Cutlers were self employed and carried out all the processes of blade making. They would have a smithy adjoining their houses, where they forged the blank blades, which would then be taken to one of the grinding hulls where they were ground and polished prior to having the handles fitted. There are some still around, particularly in the old part of Stannington village.

The reason I am asking about "Smithy Houses" is I was talking to someone the other day about some houses in Killamarsh...and someone mentioned they used to be "Smithy Houses"...I had never heard of them before and the person I was talking to had no idea either...they had been told years before thats what they were called....so to be honest I was curious as to what "Smithy Houses" were....sad isnt it...but hey ho......:D
