green
How much tax is fair to pay? How much would the Govt want or need? Labour only put the 40% tax rate up in the dying days of Govt so that they could win back the ground with the working class whom had left them in droves as they saw the Corporates running the country. The rate didnt need to go up, in fact if HMRC had not had a light touch attitude to big business paying tax, closed the loopholes and the Govt stopped subsidsizing big biz, then id surmize that 40% could come down. Given how many years we have paid these ridiculous sums of monies, where is our infrastructure? Where are the new houses? Why were our schools & hospitals built on PFI? Where has the money gone???? Thats the question we should be asking.
Staunton
I pay 30% and that is far too high. No-one should be paying more than 9% tax, and it should be a flat rate. I wonder if you attended a state school? Have you ever visited a GP, or been referred or admitted for tests or treatment at an HNS hospital? Did you ever call 999 in an emergency? Have you got any vulnerable family members?, perhaps a nephew with a disability or a great-aunt who is becoming increasingly infirm? Do you like the idea that you have a court service to seek redress should you be the victim of a criminal or civil offence, or find yourself wrongly arrested? Have you ever driven on a motorway? If you see any value at all to these services, then you might find that your taxes give you a great deal of security in an unpredictable world. And it is essential that we all appreciate that our tax system is being fundamentally destabilised by the corporate sector, who simply pay no tax - subverting democracy and fair competition - small businesses are paying higher taxes than ever whilst many multinationals pay nothing at all. I like tax, and so should we all. The happiest and fairest countries on earth are also those that pay the highest taxes.
Happ Hazzard
But nobody trusts the government or public sector in this country. Get them sorted out and perhaps people will be happy to pay high taxes. As it is, people tend to dislike having to work to pay for things they fundamentally disagree with. Absolutely - people are so much more trusting of the private sector. If only we can get the public sector to cause a financial crash on the scale that the bankers did in 2008, costing the UK taxpayer at least £850 billion, then your average Brit will be happy to part with their cash. Anna B
He's right. High taxes are disgusting. The government has no right to help themselves to so much of people's earning. Most of it is wasted anyway, on bureaucracy and inflated public sector salaries. I'd be quite happy if everyone including the rich and famous paid a flat rate of 30%, as long as they ALL do pay it. No clever little accountants finding tax loopholes for them to crawl through. I agree with you that much of it is wasted and misspent. We ought to have National public accounts published that clearly show EXACTLY where it's all gone.
El Cid
Yes I bet you pay the 40% rate Millionaires can pay really low rates on their millions, yet we pay a set rate on our PAYE income and 70% on our fuel; and a very high rate on our cigs n alcohol. It works out that those earning less pay a higher percentage of tax than the rich. Perhaps Ray was just doing it for publicity?

The bankers only cost the UK taxpayer money because the government bailed them out. Private businesses cannot by their very nature cost the public anything, only the public sector can do that.
