'Britain is being raped by high taxes' says luvvie Ray Winstone

Obviously planes cost nothing to buy or run....the rich appear to pay a bigger percentage of their wage in taxes..use this site...

http://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/salary.php

And you'll see that someone on 15k takes home nearly 13k (84%),someone on 20k takes home 16,000 approx (that's 80%) and some one on 150k takes home 90k (that's 60%)....the more you earn the more you pay..even as a percentage...

And most of that 13K will be spent on food zero vat, housing zero VAT,

Whilst most of the 90k will be spent on expensive items that have VAT added.

The allow for the fact that the low paid use public services more, kids go to state school, they use the NHS whilst the rich pay for state schools but send their kids to private schools, they pay for the NHS but pay to go private.

Looks like you just want everyone to pay more tax...is that a plan?

I thought discussion forums were meant for 2 way answers?

The government get taxes in a lot of ways, I think that they raise too much; I would favour more purchase taxes and fewer income taxes.

Yet you've just suggested raising the income tax paid by those on 15k?

I would prefer taxes to stay the same, close the loopholes and spend on things like roads/infrastructure instead of stupid wasteful things and creating non-jobs.

One of us is posting our ideas; not much of a change from starting income tax at a higher rate, stating at £15k instead of around £10k

Your ideas are sending out mixed messages..you want to cut income tax yet you want the starting %age to be 30..that's a 50% increase from the 20% is it now...

Comedian Carr is 'largest beneficiary' of scheme which shelters £168m a year from taxman

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2161394/The-1-tax-haven-Comedian-Jimmy-Carr-3-3m-Jersey-avoidance-scheme.html#ixzz2NE8NlIS1

Ancient history, the scheme has been shut down.

I can't remember if Carr is to be prosecuted, or simply have to pay all the tax he thought he'd avoided.

Top Tory donor linked to Jimmy Carr tax scheme; Romangate tax shelter, part of Rushmore scheme, had both George Robinson and Jimmy Carr as directors

These figures come from the Office for National Statistics. As the Liberal Democrats say, in 2007-08, the poorest fifth of households had a gross annual income of £11,105 on average, and paid £4,302 a year in tax, a ratio of 38.7%. Meanwhile, at the other end of the scale, the richest fifth of households had an average gross annual income of £74,247, and paid £25,926 in tax, on average, a ratio of 34.9%.

I'd love to see how those figures were calculated, they're obviously not simple PAYE statistics.

It would appear that they've ignored WTC and all the other assitance the lowest earning households would get though, in reality they are probably not net contributors at all.

That's true of direct taxation of course.

The argument is that indirect taxation, on fuel for example is regressive, and it's true in the case of fuel.

Of course most staples, ie uncooked food, are VAT and tax free, to avoid the regressive nature of taxation on expenditure instead of income.

The french want a 75 percent super-tax rate for earnings over one million euros and a new 45 percent band for revenues over 150,000 euros.

In this country we just accept the greed and crime that goes with having very rich and very poor. Its dog eat dog in this country.

And already the super rich have started leaving the country. Their overall tax revenue will decline, nobody will benefit from it, but the people who can't leave will suffer.

Yay for socialism. :suspect:

The rich pay high taxes does not make the news, that is what is meant to happen.

But how many have good accountants that avoid tax, like the comedian Jimmy Carr? The losing presidential candidate in the USA, Mitt Romney, made no secret of his low tax rate.

Romney's income -- at least the huge chunk of it that is derived from investments -- is taxed at a 15 percent rate, while others who earn their money from a paycheck are taxed at marginal income rates going all the way up to 35 percent.

You realise that the US tax regime is very different to the UK one.

I'm not sure how you think Mitt Romneys tax affairs help your point.

That is how most people think it should work; my issue is when they avoid tax by claiming to be self employed and income that is taxed at a lower rate.

If that is your issue then why is the thread about something else entirely?

In that case you need to work out how they can spend less. Because at the moment as a country we spend more than we collect in tax.
