Falklands vote to stay British

Recommended Posts

no oil has been discovered there at all. In fact the Falkland Oil and Gas share price halved recently following disapointing drilling results. Just because somebody says there might be lots of oil somewhere doesn't mean that there is.

It isn't much of a surprise they voted to stay British,i expect even though some of them have never set foot in Britain they feel more British then the British if you get the gist of my meaning.

But logically if you look at a map of the world, keeping the Falklands British makes about as much sense as giving the Isle Of Wight to Argentina!

When did that happen?

It makes perfect sense to allow the people of the islands to choose and then respect that choice.

not if no people had ever settled on the Isle of Wight before a bunch of Argentinians had turned up and lived there for 200 years and also said in a vote that they wanted to stay in Argentina. Proximity alone doesn't count for much. Greenland is far closer to Canada than Denmark. That doesn't mean Canada has any claim on it.

The search for oil there is still ongoing though isn't it.

A good enough reason to hold on to the Falklands perhaps?

They voted to stay British. Good for them. Now all the UK government has to do is convince the Argentine government that voting on an issue is one of the basic principles of democracy

I don't think there's much chance of that happening. It would be nice if the US government would accept it though, rather than pandering to the Hispanics.
