New plans for Don Valley Stadium

Recommended Posts

It seems as though the decision to close Don Valley was possibly taken three months ago.

Richard Cabourn who was one of the original organisers to build the white elephant Don Valley now seems to be organising to rebuild it again as a Rugby Stadium .

If this is true then all the recent council meetings to close the stadium presumably to save money was a load of bolony.

As usual.

I'm surprised that we've gotten to a state where people question everything someone in the council does with no proof.

Since the possible closure was discussed months ago, I'm sure a lot of people have thought of alternatives that they could do with the land/existing buildings.

But if the council was to spend money converting it, they'd be accused of waisting public money...

No decisions were made about the Don Valley 3 months ago, but its future, along with the future of every single public service in Sheffield, was certainly being looked at. Do you imagine that decisions are made overnight? Councillors and officers knew exactly the nature of the cuts to Sheffield's funding a year ago. The figures have been around on SF for longer than 6 months! £57 million this year, £30 million next year and £30 million the year after.

So naturally, once you know how much the government is cutting from your funding, you start looking at where you can save money. It isn't just Don Valley that's under review and has been for months. Where've you been?

So was it six months ago or three?

His name is spelt Caborn.

How was he an original organiser to build it? He was an MP at the time when Labour was in opposition. He wasn't a Sheffield councillor. Could you provide evidence he was an organiser. And even if he was an organiser at the time how would that detract fom the fact he's now trying to get a rugby stadium built down there? Wouldn't the experience come in useful?

Thank you for correcting the spelling .

It could have been six months it could have been years who knows.

He was part of the original Sheffield so called socialists who whether in Government or on the council championed this total waste of public money.

If you follow Rugby then the new plans will be very nice, but if you are interested in athletics then no.

The question is how much has Don Valley cost the citizens of Sheffield to date and is it now paid for.

Perhaps you can give us an answer.

It cost money - fact. But this is an interesting piece on what knock on effects the World Student Games had on Sheffield as a whole.

Today Sheffield has a unique cluster of major international sporting facilities all close together and connected by the “supertram” to the sports science and sports medicine departments within the two universities and the city’s hotels – ideal for hosting multi sport events and international training camps.

So not only did it cost us money, it has had a lasting effect on the city and a positive one at that.
