cressida
Any foreign national found guilty of a criminal offence should be deported upon conviction, not upon completion of sentence. They should also be barred from re-entry to the country on a permanent basis. If the criminal offence was violent then I would agree with deportation

They should also be barred from re-entry to the country on a permanent basis. I disagree. The prison sentence is the punishment for the offence. Why should foreigners be given a 'get out of jail free' card? Most convicted persons serve only half of their sentence before they are released 'on licence'. The other half doesn't just go away - it can be invoked in the event that the licencee fails to comply with the terms of the licence. If one of those terms is: "You shall not re-enter the UK within X years [and you can make 'X' as big as you like] then if (s)he comes back to the UK within that period (and is caught) it's a case of: "Go to Jail, Go directly to Jail, Do not Pass Go, Do not collect £200." You don't even have to bring the person before a court. (s)he has already been convicted and sentenced.
