A British food company is transferring its noodle production from two factories in China to a new £15m facility in Yorkshire.

Symington's, the Leeds-based manufacturer of Golden Wonder's pot noodles, expects to have the new factory in Hunslet open in August.

It has cancelled contracts with two Chinese factories, one in Guangzhou province and one in Hangzhou.

Sarah Bradley, Symington's operations director, said she expected to see more UK firms relocating production back home from China because it was cheaper to do so.

She said: "Labour costs have increased quite significantly in China over the last couple of years.

So will more companies follow suit, or are we so out of practise we can't produce a comparable item for other more complex products?

I'm surprised there haven't been that many companies looking for the 'next China' India or some of the other Asian countrys must have very low labour rates.

Perhaps they don't have the infrastructure tho?

I suppose if there's a ready-made market, right on your doorstep (UK), then it makes sense, and lets face it, they ain't going to be paying their workers a fortune to make pot noodles are they? Minimum wage workers, and there's plenty of those around all too willing to take those jobs here.

As China furthers it's development economically and socially living costs will increase in the country and with it wages will go up.

Things will be cheaper to produce here in Britain for a while then costs elsewhere will drop and industry will move back and forth.
