Running pain advice.

Hi

 

I'm trying to start running again after a few failed attempts,however, each time I get the same problem putting me off.

 

What happens, not long into a run, is that my lower back starts to hurt, on each side of my spine, in the muscle. This then spreads into my legs and then gives me a sensation as though my back is being forced backwards.

Hi Lee, just in a quick reply to your post... my proffession is sports massage therapy and injury rehabilitation, I just thought it might be something worth keeping in mind for you if your find yourself struggling with muscular pains, Iv included my web address below if you want to have a quick look, just a thought.

might be worth strengthening your core before you start running, try doing some press ups, squats and other core exercises to strengthen this area before doing any friction activities like running

 

Cheers Ben, that's pretty much the advice I've been following.

 

What it is the post is copied from another site that I asked on before Christmas. I copied it over as I was on my phone so it was easier.

 

A more up to date situation is that over Christmas I took some time off and did some stretching and core exercises and then started again in Jan. I'm doing one of those run/walk programs. I did eight runs where the pain ranged from starting to come on again to the later few having no pain at all.

 

Then on the 9 run the pain set in later in the run but was bearable until I got to the walk period which gave me sufficient time to rest the back.

 

However,on the 10th run it was the worse pain of all. I tried to run through it until the walk period, however the run phase had increased as it had on the ninth run and this was too long for me to bear the pain. It got to the point where it felt like my lower back was going numb so obviously stopped. The walk phase didn't give me enough time to rest the back and even walking home half way through was painful.

 

I'll look more into sports massage as this has been recommended by someone else as well.

Personally, I`d look to see a physio not a masseur. A physio will look for the cause of the problem, not just treat the symptoms.

 

Jemson is spot on. Mate, you've got a back problem that's for sure. Probably a slipped disc or a trapped nerve. You mentioned in your previous that you had the pain going down your legs. That's sciatica - it stems from your back.

 

You need to see a qualified physio - you may even need referring to a back specialist at the hospital. I had similar at one time. I ended up having physiotherapy, ultrasound and acupuncture to shift it. The physio provided all three.

 

The company was called Paul Hattam Associates and they had a place at Broomhill. Don't know if they are still there, but the guy Hattam is apparently very highly regarded in his field and specialises in back pain. (I have been to several other physio's in Sheff as well for other things - and they've all been good - but if it was back pain I'd go see Hattam again).

Spot on :)

The op needs to start by doing exercises such as curls to get the back nice and strong and ready for what lies ahead (running) :)

Sciatica can involve pain down the legs, however that doesn't mean that the OP has sciatica. Can I ask if you have a medical qualification which makes you so sure it's a back problem?

 

I'd suggest some simple stretches and warmups that include your back and hamstrings and working on your core may help as well. Just because you get pain in your back or legs, doesn't mean the cause of the problem is the back or the legs. It could be the back having to overcompensate for something else (weak core, tight hamstrings etc). Rule out just being slightly out of shape before you start going to expensive physios and talking about slipped discs/sciatica etc. With both of those you'll be in pain when resting, not just when running.

I'm thinking more along the lines of slightly out of shape if I'm honest :) . The pain does stop soon after running. In fact, in the early days of running, when the runs were less than 90 seconds just the walking period was enough to bring the pain back down. There was sometimes an ache after, but not always. However, on the last run the ache lasted for some time.

 

I've been trying to get back into running since around late November and was hoping that it would have stopped by now. In the break I had over Christmas I did some stretching that someone linked me to on another forum and some core exercises. This seemed to do the trick and I have kept up with them but the added time (over 2 minutes) to the run period it just started again and was really bad.
