Sky want to charge for a router

Recommended Posts

It is no wonder Richard Murdoch likes British people. He has a captive market of 40 million households with limited interests outside TV.

What other interests am I meant to have?

I'm disabled so although I like going out in the countryside I can't walk more than a few yards, I used to play loads of music but my bowing arm doesn't work any more, I did handicrafts, but they aren't possible with one arm, I did all my own gardening and DIY, but they take two arms too.

How I divide my household budget is up to me. Next!

I love it when people come out with "it's scandalous that I have to pay for a REPLACEMENT when new customer get it for free" argument.

You're wrong. When the piece of equipment that is required to access the service you pay for is faulty, they should replace it. Don't forget, sky will not give you your username and password to connect to their broadband service so you can use another router.

You've already had your free one when you first signed up. New customers are only getting what you got.

The equipment is a GIFT to be able to use the service, it's not rented or under any extended servicing warranty. Once's it's manufacturer warranty is expired, that's it, you're on your own.

I await a new thread in 6 months time by the OP complaining about how Sky have put up their prices, to cover the costs of those free routers they sending out to those that seem to think they're entitled to free stuff.

Change to Virgin, they don't fob you off like this, the equipment remains theirs and if it breaks they simply replace it.

Petrol companies make profit out of me filling my tank, does that mean I'm entitled to a free fill up?

If the hose that you fill your car with is faulty then would you expect to have to replace it yourself?

You are loyal ,a characteristic which Sky will exploit to their advantage.Join another provider,or better still manage without these extraneous items and lead a relaxed life.Try reading or writing poetry.

Will you be following your own advice and switching off your router?

I always find it amazing how many people want stuff for free.

I'm gong to ask the next contractor i hire to provide everything he needs free and just pay his labour,he'll surely have got his router off Sky or Virign for free so why shouldn't he give me stuff for free.

Let me speak to them as well, I'm going to see if they can convince you to buy their tools, and to replace them if they get damaged.

You pay for the provision of a service - read your contracts it doesn't say they have to provide the equipment to use it ,they do it to make you think you've got something for nothing.

If you don't have a working router then they can't be supplying you the service of internet access.

You never know if we all stopped getting free stuff they might make it cheaper,it's amazing how people accept those ideas when it involves car insurance.

I've got a satnav with a busted power cable Tom Tom don't provide a free one, even though i subscribe to their updateable services.

They would provide a new one if it failed whilst under warranty (or under the SoGA if applicable.

If you don't want to pay for stuff don't use it.

Someone also mentioned sale of goods act - IF they provide it free is it a "sale".

You can't use the service they sell you without the equipment they provide. (Well, you can provide your own, but since they DO supply the equipment why should you provide your own?)

Then how is it that I have my sky username and password. Granted not from Sky themselves, but the router gave me the details. You just need to know where to look & a quick google search tells you that ;)

Sorry, but if I have paid them for a service for a number of years then they are making a profit from me as a customer. If they can afford to give a router away to a new customer with only a year's commitment then why can they not afford to do the same when mine breaks after, for example, 5 or 6 years?

i'm with you on this one. you are paying for a service you are not getting. tell them they either send you a new router or you will cancel your direct debit. why should you pay for their broadband when you arent getting it?

Not having a working router doesn't prove non provision of service. The council provide roads if i don't have access to the road, does the provision not exist ?

In the good old days - you bought a mobile phone and got a contract for it(mine was £10) now you get a free phone a 2 year contract that usually starts at £25,how many people return the phone after 18 months an get a new one.

Now if the contract states you must only use their router than that may be different.

There are many hobbies which sufficed before satellite TV became the norm. You should contact some of the many housebound OAPs like my mum. They cannot afford Sky but manage to read, garden, listen to music and the radio, cook, socialise, visit libraries and even surf the internet.Your handicap is unfortunate but I suppose it is a question of adaptation. In addition my comments were intended for a general readership and not exclusively yourself. There were 39,999,999 other households cited.

Does having all those hobbies mean that you can't also have sky TV?

To be fair I don't like to garden, maybe that's how I find time to watch a little TV (although not through Sky, through Virgin).

Where did you get the number of 40 million from? Every adult in the UK is part of a captive audience for sky? Because none of them like to do the hobbies you listed? I don't see your logic.
