TORONTONY
My parents bought our first television from W.H.Curtis in around 1954. It was a dark foggy afternoon when his men fitted the aerial, we then had to wait for Mr. Curtis to deliver the Ferguson television. We where allowed to stay up to watch Arthur Askey making pastry. The next day we went to the shop in London Road to pay for it. I seem to remember Dad writing out a cheque for £70 which would have included all setting up costs. I remember Mr. Curtis having a workshop and yard in Benty Lane at Crosspool. Your dad had a chequebook in 1954? I didn't have one in 1981 when I left the country, Every thing was cash, in my world, in those days lol:hihi: ---------- Post added 12-03-2016 at 00:20 ---------- Anybody ever have the metered TV sets? You had to shovel two bob coins in and on a given day a tally man would come and empty the box and give you a rebate, providing that you had watched enough television, and had not broke into the box to get a packet of fags lol:cool:
