Eastland Homes apologises over benefit cuts advice

Recommended Posts

A housing association has apologised to "horrified" residents after suggesting they give up Sky TV, cigarettes, drink and bingo to deal with benefit cuts.

While it may have been harsh it is taxpayers money which is being used to pay for these.

Were they right to make this statement, which has since been withdrawn?

Yes, very wrong.

It panders to a stereotype which suggests all on benefits do this.

It couldn't be further from the truth, and isn't fair.

No if you can't afford your food and rent you can't afford sky tv or cigs can you.

Obviously the comment on applies to people who are struggling yet can afford booze sky tv and cigs etc

Why should they apologise for something that everyone else has to do. Those in work, live within their means, why does this have to exclude those on benefits?

Were they horrified that they might have to give these things up, or horrified at the suggestion that they had them?

Horrified at the suggestion that they have them of course.

It is so unfair to vilify all benefit claimants in this way.

It is a deliberate attempt to deflect blame from where it should really be (the government) and put it on those least able to defend themselves and with no voice.

I find it hard to believe that people still fall for it after everything that's happened.

Divide and conquer.

Not all people on benefits can afford these luxuries, but I have news for you, there are those who can and do.

The governments cut to benefits is hard to accept, but when you compare it to what the rest of us have to do to support ourselves, its hard not to warm to it. There are those who live pretty well on benefits, what the government has failed to do is differentiate between those who get more than they need and those who struggle on what they get.

Are they supposed to go around door to door asking if people buy fags and booze instead of paying their rent and buying food ?, no of course not the only way the message can be sent out is to everyone, how else would they do it ?

If they don't waste their benefits then the message does not appeal to them but for those that do, they will get face on about it and complain yet their the ones wasting their money on crap they shouldn't be buying.
