I think this man is totally admirable.

Richard Wise is a lawyer who works tirelessly at obtaining the release of women who are in prison for the 'crime' of being poor - i.e. non payment of fines, TV licence, council tax and other relatively small debts. He's very good at it and has succeeded in 355 out of 360 cases in the past year and half.

The guy is a true star. If only we had more like him :(

I'd like to add that a kind fellow member has let me know via PM that the article is now 17 years out of date. Despite that I still think it's a noteworthy topic of conversation and if anyone has any more up to date information about what Richard Wise is up to now I'd be delighted to hear it.

Edit: I've just found this which is from 1999 - http://www.thelawyer.com/brothers-in-law-put-up-a-fight/103542.article - still fighting for the poor. Let's hope he's still at it.

It's the kind of thing the Christian churches in this country should be doing too.
