What would happen if people on benefits were given more money?

Recommended Posts

Would they go to Barclays then :)

I was thinking more of ethical banks, credit unions or peer to peer lending.

All are better options than legal online loan sharks

People have enough money to live on.

How are the legal loan sharks worse?

People don't have enough money to live on. It's why they go to loan sharks.

Legal loan sharks are worse. They don't just turn up on your doorstep. They roll over loans again and again, have a slick office-based harassment operation. They email, phone and invade every aspect of your life 24/7. And they back it all up with a legal team that will run you through the courts.

It's a nasty business destroying a lot of people who have little to begin with.

Surely the record employment figures & mass immigration into the UK by folks arriving to take UK jobs is a clear indication that our policies are working better than in the EU as a whole. Otherwise it would be British unemployed flocking to mainland Europe to take the jobs being created there.

The reason our unemployed aren't heading across the channel is there are no jobs there and they are better off here claiming benefits.

It probably just shows we have a differently structured labour market where part-time work and zero hours contracts are more common. Many of the jobs don't provide a living wage because employers rely on the wages they pay being topped up by the state.

Anyway, you haven't answered the question. What are the coalition doing to prevent us being swamped next year?

Just because they spend more money than they are getting, does not mean that they are not getting enough.

Is their problem more one of failure to spend their money wisely? Adicted to gambling, alcohol and smoking; or not just being able to say no, when it comes to Nike trainers or a mobile phone?

Where is the evidence that in general people are not spending their money wisely?

Don't give me a bullpoo link from the Daily Mail.

Because some people don't manage their money wisely does not mean that all people do not manage their money wisely.

I doubt the coalition can do anything to stop the immigration next year. It is a pity the previous administration didn't allow us the promised referendum on the Lisbon Treaty before they signed away our rights. At the moment EU membership prevents us doing anything about it. The conservatives have promised a referendum on EU membership. UKIP have said they would take us out without a referendum. Labour and Lib/Dems wouldn't give us the option, because they know a referendum would probably result in us leaving the EU.

So you takes your choice. I doubt UKIP would be in a position to deliver but a conservative UKIP coalition might well be able to.

It's perhaps just a hunch based on the number of satellite dishes you see around council estates, the number of folks you see smoking outside Wetherspoons, and the number of widescreen TVs being delivered around Wybourne.

27% men and 14% women drink over recommended number of units weekly. (ONS 1998)

As many as 350,000 people in the UK have a significant gambling problem.

About 30,000 people in the UK die from lung cancer each year. About 25,000 people in the UK die each year from this serious lung disease. About 120,000 people in the UK die each year from heart disease. About 1 in 6 of these is due to smoking. More than 8 in 10 cases are directly related to smoking.

Those figures are for the entire population, not sure if those on benefits would have more of fewer problems.

This is for the general population. Break it down by income group and it might be worth a discussion.

If coalition economic policy had been successful then instead of fearing a new influx of people we could be welcoming them. But policy has failed and now we have a problem. So what are they doing?

I would suggest that basing your prejudice on a hunch about satellite dishes and people having a fag outside wetherspoons is not a great position to be arguing from.

What work? The government's own figures state that there are over two and a half million people without work, and that there are only 500,000 vacancies. And as we all know, most successful job applications are made by those already in work.

500,000 jobs fill em,more people with more money will create more jobs.
