Forget 4x4s in this weather

Recommended Posts

Why buy a 4x4 and pay the extra fuel and tax not to mention the other running costs, the way forward is winter tyres, i've not been stuck once and they practically turn your car into a 4x4 anyway.

The amount of astonished faces that has seen me drive up steep snowy hills was great to see. :o

But one would assume that someone with a)the cash and b)the knowledge to fit winter tyres may be a little more experienced/better than many of the nuggets stuck in snow.

We have a Landrover - it doesn't improve my wifes capabilities at all.

For me however i was out in the deep snow @ 7.30 a.m yesterday taking care of the horses and then fetching "emergency" supplies just in case it got worse.

Is it safe to ride a horse when its icy?

Totally agree.

After 40 years of driving,I decided to buy a set 2 years ago and I have been amazed at the difference it makes.

Fortunately I had to cancel an appointment to revert to normal tyres a couple of weeks ago,and I am so glad now.

I put a set of continental winter contact TS850 tyres on mine, only problem I had was bit of slipping up Winnats in snow. Great otherwise!

Was planning on putting summers on yesterday but put it off until next week LOL.

the other thing about 4x4 is the drivers seem to assume that going down hills they are invincible too - last year we saw 2 Range Rovers embedded in walls. One at the bottom of a hill where the driver clearly tried to brake and was going too fast, the other on a bend where they just slid / rolled off the road

4x4 = better NOT invulnerable

to be fair if the conditions are that bad the snow tyres wont trump 4x4 but for most winter "normal" stuff they are good

4x4 doesn't really help trying to stop down a hill. I have to drive down Granville Rd on my commute and always lots of accidents there when it snows. Most are 4x4 crashed into the zebra crossing bollards.

Also they aren't snow tyres, they are winter tyres and will be better than all weather/summer tyres in anything under 7degrees so that is pretty much all winter.

Winter tyres may turn your car into a 4x4, but having a real 4x4 in the snow turns you into an arsehole who thinks they're driving a tank.
