Murphy Jnr
Regardless of the spare, the above mentioned Inspection Guide includes this amongst the reasons for Refusal to Test: g. A proper examination cannot be carried out because any door, tailgate, boot, engine cover, fuel cap or other device designed to be readily opened cannot be readily opened. They only have to unhook a bungee though, that's easy and people secure tailgates with them when carrying items that prevent it shutting.

See above. Temporary fixings are not acceptable.
JFKvsNixon
If it can close and open correctley with the aid of say a bungee rope or some other device would that be permissable? I guess that the MOT inspector may have a different interpretation of what correctly is to you.
Murphy Jnr
See above. Temporary fixings are not acceptable. I know neither of us care but just to be pedantic the requirement is that the tailgate has to be secure whereas doors it stipulates that the latch must be operable. geared
It depends on if the MOT tester considers a bungee 'secure' and if he's happy with you driving off with it in that state and his name on your certificate.
speedway fan
Why not fit a " Paddy Hopkirk Fastener" or even an asp and staple with a padlock.

Pixie824
As stated on 'Superscrimpers' last night, for an MOT every door on the car, and that includes the bonnet and boot, must open and close properly to pass inspection. I'd guess a bungee is not 'properly'.
