IDS reckons he could live on £53 a week. Currently on £1581 a week.

That's pretty much the Mirrors take on it.

So if we can take anything from this childish nonsense it's that the left wing press will demonise and castigate anyone who used to be on the dole if they dare to get a job and better themselves. Hardly socialism in action is it?

He was criticised for selling weapons to third parties, quite contrary to catholic teaching. He used his military expertise for personal gain, irrespective of the consequences.I would not be surprised if Marconi sold weapons to Iraq and Iran, and other rogue states.

Do you have any proof of any of that?

No I think it's the Daily Mail and the Sun that likes to be the Tory party's propoganda machine and demonise benefit claimants.

A better question would have been "When did you last spend only £53 in a given week?"

IDS was lying and over the next few weeks will be exposed as an intellectual pygmy again. However I can understand a rich man like him wanting to humble the poor but I cannot understand why the SF ten bob millionaires wish to emulate his example.

I will second that gnvqsos, A few on this forum are full of themselves.

IDS is gonadic. Nobody can live on 54 notes a week. Welcome back to the tories real goal folks. Blame the poor. Blame everybody with less than 1 million in the bank. I cannot believe that history is repeating itself once again.

Remember the poll tax riots dudes?

Mark my words. This will only get worse. And, I for one hope it does.

Well it seems to be the Mirror and the Independent that are ripping into the SoS for having the temerity to get off the dole and earn money. So the facts would seem to be against your view.

I cannot prove he mentioned his army experience when applying for jobs but it is safe to assume he did.

Of course he will have mentioned his Army experience, that's not in any doubt.

But you said "He was criticised for selling weapons to third parties, quite contrary to catholic teaching. He used his military expertise for personal gain, irrespective of the consequences.I would not be surprised if Marconi sold weapons to Iraq and Iran, and other rogue states."

So who criticised him would be a start.

To be honest that whole post just looks massively libelous both to IDS and BAE.

Nothing libelous about describing a jobs purpose, selling arms is quite legal-its simply immoral. That is an opinion, and no slur is intended.Whats your take-selling arms, good or bad?

Matthew Norman at The Independant seems to think it was arms -

IDS spent six months on the dole himself after leaving the Army in 1981, yet curiously there is no record of him doing unpaid work to safeguard his self-respect. Obviously, he volunteered for some noble cause, such as shelf-stacking, because the great altruist who eventually found work selling arms for GEC-Marconi would not have lounged around in his jim-jams while the neighbours braved the commute. Perhaps he would care to tell us about these good works. The image of IDS as archetypal welfare scrounger is simply too painful to bear.

I agree, however, that despite giving a degree of insight into his character, it is not strictly relevant to the debate.

Here we go-the evidence of arms sales,OK,AG?
