Bigthumb
It looks like the E-cig is coming under a lot more scrutiny in the states. Restrictions on sales and use are anticipated. Will we follow the USA's lead? http://www.kansas.com/2013/10/20/3067515/fda-regulations-may-restrict-e.html The FDA is set to decide this month whether to lump e-cigarettes in with conventional smokes as part of its oversight of the $90billion U.S. tobacco market. Such a step would set the stage for greater restrictions on production, advertising, flavorings and online sales. With at least 40 U.S. states seeking stricter rules and federal health officials raising the alarm about e-cigarette use by children, manufacturers of the smokeless devices are preparing for a FDA crackdown. “We do anticipate becoming a regulated industry, so it is very possible the way in which we advertise will change,” said Andries Verleur, co-founder of e-cigarette maker VMR Products. Alien52
If it means realising that nicotine is a highly addictive and dangerous drug, then hopefully, yes.
onewheeldave
If it means realising that nicotine is a highly addictive and dangerous drug, then hopefully, yes. It's certainly highly addictive, but not highly dangerous. Cigarettes/pipes etc are clearly dangerous, due to the toxic compounds they contain but actual nicotine on it's own is fairly harmless. I agree that nicotine is fairly harmless in the quantities consumed by smokers (or vapers) and it's the associated compounds from burning tobacco that do the damage. But nicotine in larger quantities is a poison. 30-60mg is the lethal dose in humans - one ciggy will give you around 1mg of nicotine. However, nicotine can also be beneficial and it's thought that it's the nicotine content of cigarettes that is responsible for the health benefits of smoking. In other words the beneficial effects of smoking could be gained just from nicotine consumption without the smoking.
