SteelCityAle
who's 'we' in this instance? and for that matter, who's 'camra' - the POTY is voted for by the members of the local branch, but many of them actually have nothing to do with the branch other than paying their subscription and voting. So it's not the committee deciding their favourite pub among a dozen of them, it's potentially 1,300 different people (not sure what % actually vote, but will be a good couple of hundred people) deciding. naturally, the ones more members go in will get more votes, but what's the alternative? some sort of subjective judging, which is actually more likely to result in half a dozen people deciding the best pub
barry docks
OK, I forgot to mention, if it lands on it's side it's The Dronfield Arms! It is good to see the Sheffield award go to someone different though I have to agree with Mogwai84 about Shakespeare's needing a bit of a tidy up. Do I assume the top 10 list will appear in the next edition of Beer Matters?
jemson
That's great news. Ive been raving about this place for a while now. Chris and his team work really hard and they usually have some great beers on offer. They even go the extra mile and let you sample stuff from the cellar, if it's ready. Well done! DerbyTup
for reference the pubs serving real ale in the sub-branch area... Apperknowle Barrack Travellers Rest Coal Aston Chequers Cross Daggers Royal Oak (Pond) Yew Tree Dronfield Bowshaw Inn Coach & Horses Dronfield Arms Green Dragon The Manor House Victoria White Swan Dronfield Hallowes Three Tuns Dronfield Hill Top Hyde Park Inn Dronfield Woodhouse Gosforth Fields Sports Club Hearty Oak Jolly Farmer Miners Arms Talbot Arms Holmesfield Angel Inn George & Dragon Horns Inn Rutland Arms Thai at the Travellers Hundall Miners Arms Millthorpe Royal Oak Troway Gate Inn Inn at Troway so just about all of them then? And this is the problem isn't it? Since big brewers realised that the game was up for their crappy keg beers they've started sticking the odd hand pull beer on in most pubs in order to qualify as a real ale pub. London Pride, Black Sheep, Old Speckled Hen, Ruddles County, Deuchars Caledonian, Marston's Pedigree. All once were great beers - now mass produced real ale rubbish that serve as an entry ticket to the real ale world. Thankfully we have lots of good micro brewers who are benefiting too from producing excellent real ales although you won't find too many of them in most of the pubs listed above. slh73
CAMRA are stuck firmly in the 70s and refusing to move with the times, and are, IMO, doing more harm than good for the good beer cause. http://www.sabotagetimes.com/life/camra-brewdog-and-the-craft-beer-conspiracy/ http://www.brewdog.com/blog-article/craft-beer-v-real-ale http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/missed-opportunity.html

The choice pubs beer wise of the Dronfield area list would be Horns Inn, Rutland Arms, Jolly Farmer, Coach & Horses, Gosforth Fields, Dronfield Arms, Three Tuns, Miners Arms (Hundall) and Travellers Rest (Apperknowle). ---------- Post added 05-04-2013 at 10:11 ---------- CAMRA are stuck firmly in the 70s and refusing to move with the times, and are, IMO, doing more harm than good for the good beer cause. http://www.sabotagetimes.com/life/camra-brewdog-and-the-craft-beer-conspiracy/ http://www.brewdog.com/blog-article/craft-beer-v-real-ale http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/missed-opportunity.html Unable to see the Tandleman blog as my works internet filter blocks it, but the other two refer to Brewdogs publicity stunt of booking a brewery bar at the Great British Beer Festival (GBBF) but then failing to pay for the pitch and also refusing to comply with the logistical requirements of the festival. Surely the vast majority of brewers supplying GBBF could be described as craft brewers? Oh and Brewdog are so craft and punk that they supply Tesco own brand beer at a fifth of the price they charge in their own bars....
SteelCityAle
no problem with them brewing Tatsco own-brand beer - it's pretty good for a start! however, dumbing down your flagship beer cos Sainsburys asked you to, now THAT is not punk... Tandy's post is a report on the BAGS 'task group' that came up with some eminently sensible suggestions regarding craft beer, all of which were rejected by the NE - and therein lies the problem, many CAMRA activists and branches are quite progressive (including Sheffield, lets hope it stays that way!) but the NE really are stuck in the 70s, think all beer should be made in breweries at least 300 years old and be made of toffee and twigs

There are a few stick in the muds, but not all. One of the great things about CAMRA is that it's an organization whose members actually have quite a wide range of views about beer. And I certainly wouldn't trust anything James Watt of Brewdog ever says on any subject whatsoever! Happily, Shakespeare's is a great pub that can be enjoyed regardless of any silly "craft v cask" mass debate. http://www.pencilandspoon.com/2013/04/cask-and-craft-time-to-stop-fight.html

On topic, Shakespears is a worthy winner in a City where we are spoilt for good pubs.
