Sheffield & District CAMRA - Pub of the Year awards

London Pride aside (which I have a love/hate relationship with) those are more likely to turn people off real ale than onto it!

.

I've long thought it's an odd lack of joined up thinking in CAMRA - they say they want to convert lager-drinkers to real ale - an admirable sentiment - but then they bemoan us brewers for brewing so many pale ales and call for more 'traditional' brown beer with twigs in. If you're gonna convert lager-drinkers, it'll be pale beers that do it, giving the awards like Champion Beer of Britain to e.g. a mild will simply make those lager drinkers think that if that's the best beer in britain then the rest probably aren't worth trying!

Why do CAMRA never support the pubs that are doing their bit, but on a 'Tied' basis? We have sold over 100 different beers in the last year, but we only have 2 pumps. Regardless of the numerous requests we can't get any more fitted.

Maybe CAMRA are sometimes doing 'more harm than good' in just supporting the same old same old. We offer a student discount on real ale (& for camra members) & have probably got more than our fair share of students to give it a try.

But some things never change.

Shakies have sold well over 1000 ales since opening in July 2011!

CAMRA are stuck firmly in the 70s and refusing to move with the times, and are, IMO, doing more harm than good for the good beer cause.

Whichever way you look and judge, Shakespeare`s is a winner.

Last time I was in, they`d got a rare Brooklyn kegged beer (There will be black?) which was a £6 a pint `collector`s item alongside local favourite Deception on cask at £2.30. And then the likes of Steel City`s leftfield Rum n Raisin IPA for the more adventurous. All bases are covered on Gibraltar Street imo!
