swarfendor437
OK, there is a new 'kid' on the block, and it's name is MakuluLinux (Makulu is Zulu word for "The Big Chief".) The main distro is a traditional GNU/Linux one using XFCE desktop. A recent spin-off is MakuluLinux 10 "Aero" requested by users to help Winodws users to Migrate, and I must say it is pretty, but still in Beta - I have it installed alongside Windows 10 Insider Preview! I used EasyBCD as in my Vimeo vid and all is well - so far! Edited June 28, 2015 by swarfendor43
swarfendor437
For anyone running Zorin 9, please note there is an unofficial manual now available, courtesy of a Zorin forum member who got inspired with my Zorin 6 manual (which I have now abandoned due to the glibc security error). Get the manual from here (you need to download both 7-zip files: https://app.box.com/s/jl6yw0bfgze28r71lt790yinspfgsjfr

swarfendor437
Well 9 is relatively stable but I changed mine to have Cairo Dock as there are issues with the 'indicator3 applet' in Zorin (fork of Ubuntu 14.04): http://zoringroup.com/forum/download/file.php?id=3356&mode=view Another Windows like replacement is MakuluLinux: http://zoringroup.com/forum/download/file.php?id=4153&mode=view http://zoringroup.com/forum/download/file.php?id=4154&mode=view (based on Debian 8 Jessie (testing branch!) and still in Beta) Check out my video of Makulu "Aero" Beta2 here: XFCE version of MakuluLinux: http://zoringroup.com/forum/download/file.php?id=4151&mode=view BlueStar Linux 4.01 is one person's built version of Arch Linux: http://zoringroup.com/forum/download/file.php?id=4145&mode=view http://zoringroup.com/forum/download/file.php?id=4144&mode=view Enjoy! Come on Swarfendor, you are way too technical for me, which one is the easiest for someone like me to live with, you are obviously an expert but I'm much further down the chain from you technically speaking
Phanerothyme
get ubuntu - http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop It's pretty good out of the box. Works with most things. It's a windowed interface, just like PC/Mac, works slightly differently to both of them, and adds handy things like multiple desktops.
swarfendor437
You may want to go with Zorin which has the familiar look and feel of Windows with its menu. Or as Phanerothyme has suggested, Ubuntu, but for stability reasons I would go with either: Ubuntu 14.04 Or Zorin 9 I would choose 32-bit as there are less complications than 64-bit, especially if you were thinkking of running Windows applications. My advice to you would be to download a distribution that will run in Live mode. That way you can see if things do 'work out of the box'. We don't know if you are intending to install to a desktop or Notebook - there can be issues with Suspend/Hibernation and certain HotKeys - just remember this is not a GNU/Linux issue but vendors sticking with 'proprietary' drivers. Personally I have been most satisfied with the GNU/Linux drivers. The only area where you have to use proprietary drivers for GNU/Linux are drivers for All-in-One printers - I have recently had to upgrade to a new printer and went for the Canon MG7550 - printer works fine in MakuluLinux but having issues with Zorin 9 - just spewing out blank pages with the GNU/Linux driver provided by Canon. MakuluLinux even showed the MAC address of the wireless printer in the Printers menu - but this is still in beta - if you mess with the Menu theme in Makulu you may lose the Windows 7 type theme. For Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS (supported to April 2019, as is Zorin 9): http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/thank-you?country=GB&version=14.04.2&architecture=i386 For Zorin 9: http://sourceforge.net/projects/zorin-os/files/9/zorin-os-9-core-32.iso/download Screenshots of Ubuntu 14.04: http://www.debianadmin.com/ubuntu-14-04-lts-trusty-tahr-screenshots.html Screenshots of Zorin 9: http://zorin-os.com/gallery.html Just post back here if you want any help or guidance! Phanerothyme
Canon have always been crappy about drivers for Linux. Canoscan 5200F wouldn't play at all.
swarfendor437
Well that depends on whether it is supported in SANE hardware list - Canon LiDE 700F at work worked with Zorin on my usb stick but my 600F wouldn't. What DOES work is VueScan - pricey for the Pro version but does licence up to 4 separate machines - I downloaded the demo and it works great with our MG7550: http://www.hamrick.com/ I used the demo in MakuluLinux but it does require cable connection via usb. I haven't had time to play with a separate access point and network cable yet.
kidley
I hope this is not too silly a question but here goes, i am thinking of downloading ubuntu desktop onto a USB stick and booting it from there, my question is, if my USB stick is 16gb ubuntu 1gb leaving 15gb on my flash, if i download 2gb of letts say films, does that go on to my USB stick leaving 13 gb on the stick or, does it go on my hard drive. kidley
