(snipped)...

There are of course a minority on here that are obviously very intelligent and that is a factor that prevents those who may not be quite so eloquent or confident enough to argue there view.

It's not intelligence alone that puts people off - some very intelligent posters are also very helpful and understanding.

It's those posters who have intelligence but lack the social skills to communicate with the 'man on the street' that annoys most people.

These are the ones that come across as arrogant and put people off posting - and I bet we can all name at least 3 without trying too hard! :)

That's very true....I guess it does come down to social graces and good old 'tact and diplomacy'...I do know some people who are 'super intelligent'...who are completely void of any social graces whatsoever.

I'm also slightly puzzled why people in this thread are debating the Thatcher legacy

Yeah that's what I meant, thank you.

They are being binary, Pete.

Some folks can only carry one set of ideas in their head at any one time:)

Some really interesting responses to my question though.

I wonder whether those posters who take entrenched positions are like that in real life. Do they always take a particular postion at work, for example?

I suspect not. (of course I could be completely wrong...and not afraid to admit it)....I think it's probably what would be referred to on here as "the keyboard warrior" syndrome. It's easy to be offensive and dogmatic when nobody knows who you are!

But you can easily find out who people are if you know what you're doing and can put in the time to find out. How do you think people are prosecuted for hacking and such?

But there are some that take what is written personally, its just words from an anon-person.

Ah...but I would say that probably the majority of people "wouldn't know what they were doing" in regard to finding out who people are. yes I know it's 'possible' ... But not 'easy' for the average forummer.

I think that I agree with you. I'm certainly more open minded in real life than I am on internet forums.

I do try to see both sides of everything. As you can see from the provocative stuff even on this thread, that is some times difficult. Especially when others are trying to gain a bite.

Especially when others are trying to gain a bite.

But there are also people with oppossite views, left and right, socialist and capitist, environmentalist and petrol-head; they dont need to be wind-up merchants, just giving their side of the story.
