None is paid for council houses that have been sold and mortgages paid on them. Do you think the amount of rent paid by tenants, excluding housing benefits, cover the cost of administrating, maintaining and modernising large council house stocks ? (Sorry but I can't be bothered to investigate the details) Since council houses are cheaper than privately renting, either there is some subsidy, or the public sector operate better than the private sector. The councils should stand to profit on council housing over the long term even at reduced rent. Selling the council housing stock was short termism at it's worse.
